What Age Should Kids Start Sports Performance Training?
Parents often ask when their child should begin sports performance training. At Elite Edge Sports Performance, structured programs begin at age eight, but age is only part of the answer.
A child should also be able to follow basic instructions, participate safely in a group and show an interest in sports or physical activity.
For younger athletes, the goal is not heavy lifting or intense conditioning. The goal is to build a strong athletic foundation.
Athletes ages 8–11 begin in the B.I.G. Foundations program, where they work on:
- Running and coordination
- Jumping and landing
- Balance and body control
- Acceleration and stopping
- Age-appropriate strength
- Confidence and training habits
Strength exercises may include bodyweight movements, resistance bands, TRX exercises and light kettlebells. Training should match the athlete's ability and gradually progress over time.
Middle school athletes ages 12–14 enter the B.I.G. Motor program. Training becomes more structured and may include sprint mechanics, strength training, power development and conditioning.
High school athletes ages 15–18 enter the B.I.G. Competition program. These athletes can progress into more advanced training based on their experience, sport schedule and goals.
How Do I Know If My Child Is Ready?
Your child may be ready if they:
- Want to become stronger or faster
- Need better coordination or confidence
- Can listen and follow coaching
- Are preparing for a higher level of competition
- Would benefit from structured training outside of practice
Every new athlete at Elite Edge begins with a free assessment week. This helps our coaches determine the right program and starting point.
Elite Edge Sports Performance is located in Valencia and serves youth athletes throughout the Santa Clarita Valley.
